As Victoria celebrates zero Covid cases with continued “donut days”, Temple Beth Israel is giving out free donuts as part of “Share the Light”, a multi-cultural festival celebrating Chanukah sharing joy in our community.

Volunteers from Nourish, TBI’s response to homelessness and hunger, will give out free hot donuts at a donut drive-thru at TBI from 5-6pm throughout the festival of Chanukah, 10 – 18 December.

“What better way to celebrate both the joy of being Covid-free and the miracle of Chanukah, than with free hot donuts?”, said Rabbi Kim Ettlinger. Donuts are a traditional Chanukah food.

As well as a donut drive thru, the Share the Light festival will also feature music, candle lighting, podcasts, interfaith blessings, and activities each night of Chanukah, online at

Rabbi Gersh Lazarow said, “Victorians have had a dark year. This Chanukah, we want to share the light and joy of the holidays with everyone, not just those who usually celebrate.”

“Come, share a donut then login and share the message of light through darkness”, said Rabbi Lazarow.

“This year has taught us more than anything that it is unity that helps us get through dark times”, said Rabbi Ettlinger.

The donut drive-thru also marks the re-launch of Nourish, TBI’s program for feeding the hungry. Nourish has been on hiatus throughout the series of Covid lockdowns. From 7 December, each Monday Nourish will be providing dinner to anyone who is hungry from 5:30-7pm in the forecourt of TBI. The donut drive-thru will be in addition to this.
